On the Job

NYPD Asleep
Photo by myself of a policeman in Herald Square.

It must be hard to be on your feet all day. This gentleman was taking probably a much needed break, as pedestrians, traffic and all else whirred by.

I've been listening to NPR podcasts at work lately, my small attempt at learning a few things while I still have brain cells.

Yesterday my ipod conked out in the afternoon, in the middle of a Fresh Air podcast, where Terri Gross was interviewing a reporter close to the Dalai Lama. I'd been entranced with what they were saying, about the Lama's non-violent philosophy in the face of such turmoil between Tibet and China. Then I suddenly found myself in silence. Gah!

The next couple hours were pretty tough to get through. I was doing some intense, detailed work and it was dead quiet around me.

I know there is a Buddhist lesson to be learned here. I know it. I was supposed enjoy the silence and hear the one hand clapping or the pitter pattering of each moment as they ticked by.

Patience, grasshopper.

Lovely capture. Very candid I'd say :) Great shot. Great blog too.

Thanks for the info on Fresh Air. I have been looking for Podcasts to listen to while on the train.

DO you know iTune has podcasts of tours of the MET and MoMA?

Welcome, Sujit
and thanks for your comment. Your photos are absolutely stunning. I need to revisit your blog and learn from you!

Hey Ming
How interesting that they podcast on Art? I bet that's an interesting experience, hearing people talk about what you can't see. I bet it creates a whole other dimension about the artwork

Thanks for the heads up!

I so wish I could fall asleep anywhere. But I can't. One of my sons can - he used to walk along as a toddler and just drop. I had to take him to have a brain scan incase it was something more serious but it wasn't - he would just fall asleep when he was tired whatever he was doing.

Kitty,
I love this capture. What a perfect shot. The fellow's posture says volumes.
BTW, the Dali Lama arrives in Seattle tomorrow, and not for anything controversial, but to host a conference on the roots of compassion in childrens' lives.

Most times I guess it would be a lonesome job too.

I like your photo today. Abraham Lincoln in Brookville, Ohio.

I can't imagine being a beat Cop in NY. That would be so hard to walk around all day. And the crowds!!! Not for me thanks! Give my Cruiser any day!

Hi Fredrik
Thanks! I look forward to peeking into your lovely blog today! :-)

Hi RB
I'd freak out as a parent, too. How strange? Kids are like that, I guess, they want to squeeze all they can out of every day.

Hi Kim
Thank you! How neat about the DL? I really love their philosophy.

Incidentally there was another Tibet rally in Union Square last night. They've been very vocal lately.

Hello Mr Lincoln
Good point. It must be tough on the beat. I'd never be able to do it.

Hi Carolyn
lol, I'd be in the passenger seat next to you.

Very cool picture. It makes me appreciate the work police men do for us.

I was just talking to my boyfriend about China and how they bully Tibet--it's so awful. But...alas, you can find peace and sometimes it can only come from silence (or tuning out the noise). Actually, the police officer looks quite peaceful in that photo although he is surrounded by noisy new york. Great photo kitty!

Welcome Scott
Thanks so much, and I look forward to visiting your blog. Thanks so much for the link!

Hi D
Thanks so much. I hope the police guy is not too embarrassed by our excitement, lol

Hi Tammy
I have a soft spot for the NYPD. Bless them.

Hi Nubia
It's hard to figure out what the real story is about China and Tibet. There is just so much publicity involved.

I think one can find peace in anything, really. Vikor Frankl wrote a memoir about his time in a concentration camp, actually. 'Man's Search For Meaning' is supposed to be an amazing, inspiring read.

So yes, you can find peace in any situation, I suppose. People can survive just about anything.

I've never heard of the memoir but i'd like to read it. thanks for sharing!
