An older man wheeled his grandson in a little shopping cart. (I'm just assuming he didn't purchase the little boy somewhere!)
Mark and I stopped by Sunset Park, for a dim sum lunch. Not the most comfortable ride, a shopping cart is a sensible choice in the city - it folds up nicely for apartment dwellers, and is very lightweight.
The southern part of this neighborhood is known as Chinatown, in Brooklyn. Restaurants are not limited to Chinese or Cantonese food - there are Malaysian and Vietnamese eateries, too. Meanwhile, the northern part of Sunset Park is home to a large Hispanic population.

Barber Shop, Brooklyn

In parts of Brooklyn, there are several barber shops on a block. These are places for guys to sit and hang out.
Mark and I were in the area for Vietnamese food in neighboring Chinatown.

Watch Repair, in Sunset Park

A young man performed watch band repairs on the sidewalk, in Sunset Park. This is the Brooklyn equivalent of Chinatown.
Some of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn are so self-sufficient, one could live there and never venture to Manhattan. Many people end up only speaking their native language, such as Chinese, Russian, Polish or Spanish.

City Portraits - Sunset Park, Brooklyn

It was brightly sunny this weekend, in Sunset Park. The canopies were up in the background, to keep pedestrians cool.
This area is the equivalent of Chinatown. Amazingly, just a couple blocks away is a very Hispanic neighborhood. Just take the 'R' train to 53rd Street and Fourth Avenue. Sunset Park is tucked in between Windsor Terrace and Bay Ridge.
You can find Malaysian, Vietnamese and Chinese cuisines here.
Open markets make for a lively experience during the day.
English is a second language in this neighborhood.
Fish markets were loaded with fresh seafood.
A shoemaker set up his temporary space on the sidewalk.

Passing By, in Sunset Park

Sunset Park is the equivalent of Chinatown in Brooklyn. Stores and restaurants are crowded around Eighth Avenue, since the word 'eight' in Mandarin sounds similar to the word meaning 'good fortune'.
As in Chinatown in Manhattan, many storefronts open directly to the street. This makes walking down the sidewalk slow, as people cannot help but look into each store.
I took this photo last year and it's one of my favorites. The blue light of the tv contrasts nicely with the store interior.

On the Pricelessness of New York Delis

A fellow lounged outside a Brooklyn bodega this weekend.
Vistors might find New York delis and bodegas unsettling. Most of the stuff sold inside delis here do not have price tags.
For the longest time, I'd never buy from a deli precisely because of that. I'm just the type of person who'd like to know ahead of time how much something costs. (I've gotten over this though, and would rather buy from a neighborhood deli than a chain store like 7-Eleven).
Mark and I aren't sure why deli's don't use price tags. It's probably a combination of laziness and the flexibility of pricing things based on how they're doing for the month.

Tonight's Winning Numbers, in Sunset Park

The floor of a grocery store in Brooklyn's Chinatown is littered with the aftermath of Lotto.
Useless ticket stubs are scattered on the floor. Above on the television, were the night's winning numbers.
Oh to win the lottery and retire.
I'm not sure what I'd do with myself. Most likely potter about, travel and take photos, and just enjoy life.

Strange Skies Above Sunset Park, Brooklyn

Mark and I encountered one of the oddest skies I've ever seen, Friday night.
After a dinner in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, we walked out to an orange sky filled with small puffy clouds that looked like cotton balls. We heard on the news that the cloud formation is often associated with serious weather (there were severe thunderstorms in the area earlier).
I looked around for the space ships, it was so weird.
