Photo by myself in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Sandwich boards on the sidewalk are a common way of luring people inside restaurants and bars. I appreciate signs that show some originality.

Wrapped Bike, in Park Slope, Brooklyn
Photo by myself on Fifth Avenue, in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Someone with a lot of energy had tackled a bike on the sidewalk with wrapping paper.

Outside Chick-Fil-A, from Above and Below
When Chick-Fil-A opened its doors for the first time in Manhattan, there was a line out the door and down the street. Not just for a day or a few days or a week. For weeks.
That is how nutty some people are about their chicken sandwiches and/or nuggets. See how serious people look in line? It is serious stuff!
This fast food place has two floors. Now that the hoopla has died down, you can actually get a sandwich without waiting many minutes outdoors.
Below, a view of the line from the air.

Bath, on Cornelia Street
Photo by myself on Cornelia Street, in the Village.
Before leaving on our trip, I took a quick walk around the Village. A tall dog named Rhett was patiently receiving a thorough bath, right out on the sidewalk.
A few other people noticed and were taking photos, too. Rhett is a Borzoi and a therapy dog. Kibble is not cheap. Rhett earns his keep, getting $1/minute for his services.

Neighborhood Dog Show, in Brooklyn
Photo by myself, in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Despite the intense heat and humidity, there was a huge turn out of contestants and onlookers at a dog costume contest, in Park Slope this weekend.
Either there were a lot of female contestants, or when people think of costume, they think of embarrassing tutus. The majority of clothed dogs wore ballerina type things. Above, a black pug was surrounded by a lot of pink, while wearing pink, herself.
It was so insanely hot, I couldn't stick around to see who won.
Dog and owner posed on a raised runway for photos.
One youngster greeted another.
There was a lot of sniffing, drinking, posing and fun.

Naked, in Herald Square
Photo by myself in Herald Square, in Midtown.
Erm...perhaps the oddest thing I've seen yet.
A man and woman stood in the middle of Herald Square, one of the busiest spots in Manhattan. They were naked, but for a layer of paint. Meanwhile, another man was painting lines on the naked man.
This photo makes the area seem empty but there were video cameras, people standing around awkwardly, and the usual crowds crossing the street. This all took place on a little triangle of space where Broadway and Sixth Avenue cross one another, during lunch hour, one of the busiest times of day.
Yipes!

Grilling Guinea Pigs, in Prospect Park
Photo by myself in Prospect Park, Brooklyn.
A man grilled one of several guinea pigs this weekend, in Prospect Park.
He was a very sweet man, actually, and when I approached him, he said 'cuy' (pronounced 'quee'). I asked whether he was from Ecuador, and he said yes.
Later, Mark saw that someone had called the police, thinking the man was 'mistreating a squirrel'. The police call made it to several internet news sites, including the New York Daily News.
Guinea pigs are popular pets for children here, hence the surprise.

Beam Me Up, from Madison Square Park
Photo by myself in Madison Square Park, at 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue.
A group of people looking like they were communicating with outer space were actually communicating with their inner space, via meditation (!)
A placard nearby explained that they were members of Falun Dafa, also called Falun Gong.

Stripes, on the Subway
Photo by myself on the Q train, while on the Manhattan Bridge.
Not sure what the occasion was, but a man had three very thin stripes on his face the other day, two white ones at an angle and a yellow one down the middle. He had nodded off on his way into work.
I was trying to figure out what the occasion was but I honestly have not a clue. This photo was taken on May 22, and the holidays that day include Canadian Immigrants Day, National Vanilla Pudding Day and International Day for Biological Diversity. Hm.

Critters, Streetside
Photo by myself at 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Ave. in Midtown.
A man unloaded his companions, in front of Grand Central Station at rush hour.
From left to right: a black cat, three guinea pigs, a dog and another dog. The first dog is a little difficult to see because of the loud (animal-themed) prints.
My fiancé Mark pointed out that not all the animals in the photo are real. There is a stuffed animal on the bottom bunk, below the guinea pigs. No doubt that the top bunk is the preferred spot.
I have mixed feelings when I come across people who have pets or children with them on the sidewalk, but I stopped to give the man a couple dollars.
I was surprised by the proximity of guinea pigs to cat. The guinea pigs were nearly motionless, whether because they were afraid or just hanging out (they looked very relaxed to me). A few seconds later, the man reached into a carrier and brought out several parakeets (!).

Spotted on the Sidewalk, in Sunset Park
Photo by myself around 55th Street and 8th Avenue, in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
An older man wheeled his grandson in a little shopping cart. (I'm just assuming he didn't purchase the little boy somewhere!)
Mark and I stopped by Sunset Park, for a dim sum lunch. Not the most comfortable ride, a shopping cart is a sensible choice in the city - it folds up nicely for apartment dwellers, and is very lightweight.
The southern part of this neighborhood is known as Chinatown, in Brooklyn. Restaurants are not limited to Chinese or Cantonese food - there are Malaysian and Vietnamese eateries, too. Meanwhile, the northern part of Sunset Park is home to a large Hispanic population.
Happy Monday everyone!

Husband's Resting Area, on Sixth Avenue
Photo by myself, on Sixth Avenue in Midtown.
A sign outside a jewelry store in Midtown called out the 'Husband's Resting Area'. Below it, some open seats. Ha.
I suppose this could be considered sexist? Or simply honest, since all the jewelry inside is for women.
There are several little jewelry and beading stores on Sixth Avenue, close to the Garment District. This one is fortunate to have some shaded space.

Concept Car, in Midtown
A custom white car parked in Midtown turned heads from people passing by.
Parts of this car were were very open, and looked more like a motorcycle than a traditional car. I'm not sure what the occasion was; there were no signs or anything. Its owner must have stepped away for a moment.
The view from the front.
The view of the insides. I have to admit, I was tempted to get in, since there were no doors!
There is some limited parking on the streets in Manhattan, usually limited to an hour or so with a meter. Usually you cannot find parking anywhere and must resort to an overpriced parking garage.

Free Papers, in Midtown
Photo by myself, somewhere in Midtown.
We don't have an enormous mainland China population here but on select corners, there are free 'China Daily' papers. Next to this location there was also free paper printed in Hebrew.
Maybe this is a public relations move, but it is rather a subtle one (!). There is always a ton of stuff/crap on the sidewalk, ranging from trash cans to trash bags to bikes to people.

Wedding Photos, Below Ground
Photo by myself on the Atlantic/Pacific subway platform, in Brooklyn.
An attractive young couple posed for their wedding photos in perhaps the most unromantic place possible, on a New York subway platform. The bride wore a gorgeous gown, its bright white hem brushing the grubby floor tiles. Ick.
I took this photo last night (Wednesday). This was a strange sight to the late rush hour crowd, making their journey home.
This is a very busy station in Brooklyn, where many subway lines cross one another. Many commuters stop here to change trains. The couple's photographer was standing somewhere behind me, to the right.

Humor, with a Money Back Guarantee
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park, around West 4th Street.
Here's another photo I took on the way out of the park the other day. A young man offered to tell original jokes, for a dollar apiece.
Money is refunded if you don't laugh. But if you're broke, the joke is on the house.
I was on my way to an appointment, so I couldn't stop to chat with this fellow. Next time!

A Moment, in Union Square
Photo by myself in Union Square, at 14th Street and Fifth Avenue.
A man wearing a Chicago Bulls uniform and hat of feathers sat alongside the subway entrance at Union Square. In his hand he carried some sort of voodoo cane decorated with bones.
Meanwhile in the background, another man did push ups.
I was a little worried about taking this photo, since the man wearing the feathers seemed very upset. He was muttering angrily to himself about the Hare Krishna group dancing about, some 20 paces away.

Swimming for Relief, in Herald Square
Photo by myself in Herald Square, at 34th Street and Sixth Avenue, in Midtown.
Diana Nyad, the long distance swimmer, was midway through her swim for her charity 'Swim for Relief', Wednesday morning.
A makeshift lap pool was set up right outside the entrance to Macy's. There were two lanes set up, so Nyad could have companions join her during the 48-hour swim. I was there around 10 am, and the clock was at the 25-hour mark.
There were grandstand seats, and cameras, and a narrow walkway where people could stand and take photos. Once you stood on the raised walkway, the pool was about the level of your chest.
At this writing, Swim for Relief has raised $70k, with funds going to victims of Hurricane Sandy. Their website has a webcam showing the pool (!) so you can tune into see Nyad go back and forth, and back and forth. It's a little chilly now in the city, but nothing like what it must be at sea.

Out for a Walk, in Santa Monica, California
Photo by myself at the Third Avenue Promenade, in Santa Monica, California.
Just a moment from my recent visit to California, at 'the Promenade', the main attraction in Santa Monica.
A woman chatted with passersby, while carrying her pet pig in her arms. The pig, (I assume a girl pig) wore a little halter. So I guess the pig had been out for a stroll.
The promenade in Santa Monica is a very popular outdoor pedestrian mall, lined with stores on both sides. There are fountains and musicians and eateries, too.
Oh....and farm animals.
