The Rat Pack, on Avenue C

Summit Bar, East Village
Photo by myself at 8th Street and Avenue C, in Alphabet City.

The roll down door of this small bar is decorated with a mural featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. The word "Loisada" is another name for Avenue C. This area used to be dangerous but now it's very safe.

I've never been to The Summit bar, but from the reviews, it seems quite good.

Mark and I got in very late Monday night. Our plane was scheduled to land at 11:00pm but was delayed by 3 hours because of a mechanical issue. Aargh!

I wish I had filmed Rupert's expression when we came home. He twirled around on his hind legs and zipped back and forth about the apartment. Dogs are incredible in how emotional they are.

It's good to be back, though it's chilly here. Brrr!!

I love the roll down. How nice that the area is now safe! This is the kind of big city development I like.

I love it. This picture would look awesome in black and white. :)

Roll down doors have become an endangered species, Kitty. According to an article in the New York Times, the City Council has voted to phase them out starting in 2011. So capture your cool graffiti shots while you can!

Hi Susu
Yes, the turnaround of this area is remarkable. There are plenty of war stories about Alphabet City, and from not long ago.

Hi Olivier
I agree, I love their music and time period!

Thanks Lou!

Hi Chicken
Thanks for the link. I am disappointed. Wouldn't the opening in gates allow for vandals to spray paint the storefronts? That would mean more expenses for store owners.

Hi Ken
I'm surprised...you know this city inside-out!

Thanks so much Jose!

Hi Miss B
The mommies are in full force everywhere, even the grungiest places. They are intrepid!

Thanks Terry, for the link
As I said to ChickenUnderwear, it's too bad this law was passed. I have to wonder how the cityscape will change, as a result?

I'm ambivalent about it myself, Kitty. While it will remove one more canvas for street artists, it will make the jobs of firefighters easier, I should think. It will make streetscapes a little less forbidding after hours too. And if you can actually look in closed shop windows, chances are you'll see something that will bring you back when they're open. All that said, I will miss some of the better graffiti art such as this.
