On the Steps of St. Stainislaus, 7th Street

Memorial, East Village
Photo by myself at the steps of St. Stanislaus, on East 7th Street and First Avenue.

A small shrine for the late president Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria, on the steps of St. Stanislaus in the East Village. The President, his wife and many other high officials perished in a tragic plane crash last week.

St. Stanislaus is a Roman Catholic church that conducts its masses in Polish. The Polish community has long populated the East Village as well as Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

I just came from Gliwice (Poland) Photo Daily where I admired a beautiful photo regarding the mourining after this tragedy... I didn't expect to find one in NY too, but, I guess that's quite natural, there must be a huge polish community there. Perfect finding and very touching image...

Such a touching picture. lots of emotions behind the visible. A glimpse of real life in the midst of the city bustle.

...and the president of the U.S., ostensibly in Poland for the funeral further harms the image of the U.S. abroad by playing golf instead of going to the funeral - his 32nd golf game since taking office. By contrast, the un-missed GWB played 24 times in eight years - never once when he was supposed to be at a state funeral.

That aside, how sad that this brave country, Poland, lost so many of its leaders, ironically going to the memorial of the Katyn massacre.

Thanks everyone.
I really wanted to take a photo outside the Polish consulate, which had heaps and heaps of flowers outside. The above was a humble tribute.

Louis, Obama was due to attend the funeral, but his flight was canceled due to the volcanic ash. And perhaps he likes golf more than GWB does?

Very sad. I returned from Poland the day before this tragedy. I did see, however, many such candles/lights in places where Pope John Paul had prayed.
