School is In, at Parsons on 13th Street

Parsons, 13th Street
Photo by myself at 13th Street and Fifth Avenue, in the Village.

The headquarters of the Parsons New School for Design was all a-bustle the other day, as new students were in for the academic year. The canopy serves as a striking front sign.

Parsons is the design branch of The New School. You can obtain a degree in graphic design, fine arts, architecture, interior design or fashion. They also offer continuing education courses for those who already have a degree.

The New School campus differs from a traditional college, in that buildings are not located close together. The New School has buildings in the Village, Chelsea, on the Upper West Side and even in lower Manhattan.

since i discovered your blog, i read all your posts (from old to new) whenever i am free. and today you happen to post my old school. while i was still a student there, they didn't have this big canopy (yep that's how old i am). i've been wanting to work on a blog with all the pictures of the stores and streets in nyc, but always lazy to do so, but you and your blog trigger me to get started!!

Goodness! Is it that time of year already? Where has the year gone?! :)

I love the canopy, Kitty! NYC definitely has a "go big or go home" attitude when it comes to architecture and design. Well, and to most things, really.

I remember the name of the fashion program with Tom Gunn, Project Runway. Love to watch it.

Love that canopy/sign!

It's kind of funny a few years ago say Parsons and no one other than New Yorkers or those in fashion would recognize the name, but today given shows like Project Runway it has become part of the landscape and probably on some tourists' agenda and Mood also.

Thanks everyone!
I totally forgot about Project Runway. This is the headquarters which is in the Village. The fashion school is aptly near the fashion district, on 7th Avenue around 40th Street.

Steph, I hope you do start your own blog! It is a bit of work but it's vastly rewarding.

The storefronts are fun and the streets are the essence of this place, as you well know. Let me know when the blog is up and running!

Ha Lou, I know. The year has flown by.

Hi Terry!
Great point. There is nothing subtle about this canopy and much of this city.

Hi Bieb
It's terrible but I've fallen out of watching Project Runway. I must get back into it. Great show.

Thanks RedPat!

Hi Marcia
Good point. Just a bit of the PR machine does wonders. ;-)
