Every year around Memorial Day, New York celebrates Fleet Week.
A ton of ships sail up the Hudson and dock. Almost all the ships hold free tours for visitors. And all over the place, you see sailors wandering around in their bright white uniforms, looking a bit lost.
The sailors above had just shopped at Bloomingdale's and were carrying around the telltale brown shopping bags. They walked in a v-formation.
Visitors can get access to the ships around 42nd Street and the West Side Highway.

et NYC pendant ce weekend devient une ville de garnison ;)
looks very cool and stylish!
Wearing white would guarantee me a stain within seconds.
Oh dear that looks good, I remember when we were in september 2009 in NY the whole city was crowded with these people and there was a tall war-ship in the harbour too.
Great photo, Kitty. What a cool way for the men and women serving our country to celebrate Memorial Day weekend!
I just put a third padlock on the cage where I keep my daughter.
Hi Kitty, I've been wanting to come to Fleet Week, to see the ships and whatnot, and was wondering if it's just too crowded to really enjoy anything. I've heard it's really no worse than the city at Christmas, which I experienced last year. Thoughts?
Thanks everyone! I love this time of year, it's super cool to see the guys and gal in uniform.
Welcome K10!
The city is relatively quiet around Memorial Day, and the crowds around the ships are really not so bad.
I only toured around once years ago on the ships. The only issue is that it's a bit of a hike to get over to them, parked along the West Side Highway.
I suggest going early-ish to see them, then take a nice lunch in Hell's Kitchen (9th & 10th Avenues between the high 30's and the 50's), which is just nearby. I think we're set for generally nice weather with some showers this weekend!
Sounds lovely! I read a shortened version of your post with no picture before I logged in to read for real. When I saw the picture I was confused for a second - I had been imagining the uniforms of Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly from 'On the Town' I guess. I've gotta remember this is the 21st century!
Thanks, Kitty! I think we'll head up there next year for Memorial Day weekend. :-)
