Case Closed

The Carrot Guy in Union Square
Photo by myself in Union Square.

This character, the late Joe Ades, is was well-known for his continuous spiel, hawking carrot peelers and drawing a crowd. His British accent and craggy looks remind me of Gandalf.

Fortunately for us all, it looks like the police made their man: the person responsible for stabbing Upper East Side psychologist Kathryn Faughey seems to have been nabbed last night.

Phew. New Yorkers can breathe a huge sigh of relief.

The kooks we live alongside can continue to act mildly kooky in comparison to this very troubled man. Apparently David Tarloff was a former patient of Faughey's. He'd planned on robbing the doctor and running off with his mother, which explains the bags of womens clothing and adult diapers left at the crime scene. Tarloff confessed he was enraged at whomever had had him institutionalized 17 years ago. The police still don't have the story straight.

I googled Faughey last night and the website for her private practice came up. It was eerie and sad.

How many of you would like to bet that we'll see this crime on Law and Order in the near future?

On a happier note, since it's sunny, Mark, Clive and I plan to drive out to the tip of Lawn Guyland today. I'll post some nice photos when I return!

What a interesting post. I love the shot...it captures the essence of madness somehow. And aren't we all a little mad? I think it would be great if you photographed all the madmen in NYC....who knows. Maybe you'll come across the next messiah.
Take care Kitty

We Brits are often a bit loopy!

I used to love to go down to Speakers' Corner by Hyde Park in London as a child with my grandfather. It was where anyone could stand up on a soap box for a while and spout their own nonsense - there would always be a big audience, tourists mostly but locals too. Obviously you got some real loonies and some of the stuff they said wasn't really suitable for my tender ears - but I loved it. Not sure if it still happens. But the guy in your photo would not look at all out of place there.

Hope you had fun on your outing and that Clive did not let you down.

A trip to Union Square doesn't seem complete if I don't spot this guy. The photo made me smile.

It's great news they caught Kathryn Faughey's murderer, but such a sad and grisly thing to have happened to the poor woman. Her office building was just a few blocks from me, so I didn't feel too great knowing he was on the loose.

As soon as I saw the picture of that man I was wondering what the heck he was doing? Peeling carrots knew even crossed my mind. I like JD's idea of taking pictures of all the unusual people there. I don't know about the next messiah, but I think it would interesting to see them. Take Care!

JD - That's an interesting assignment, because most people avoid such people. It'd be like jumping into the abyss. And thank you for the add, Sir!

RB - Speaker's Corner sounds entrancing. I'm assuming that Carrot Guy is British. Or he's very good at faking it for extended times.

Fish - How terrible about living near the crime scene?! Eeks. Rest easy. I swear I feel like a cow in the herd, just waiting to be picked off, sometimes.

Tammy - lol, there are too many 'unusual' people sometimes. I should hang out at Washington Square Park. Then you'd see all the freaks!

I just posted a "painting" of the famous guy who sells the Swiss veggie peeler at Union Square.

He almost looks like he's blessing the carrots :) Certainly has the attention of the guy walking past and giving carrot peeler a wide birth as he keeps his eyes peeled.
