Subway Sunset - On the Ride Home

Subway Sunset
Photo by myself, as the N train crossed the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn.

It was a spectacular sunset Wednesday. Hardened New Yorkers, tired from work, cannot help but swing around for a look.

You can see lights on the Brooklyn Bridge in the background, and graffiti scratched on the glass.

It's slowly getting darker earlier.

On the ride home, usually between 7 and 8, I can catch a glimmer of the night sky out the subway window.

Often people flip their cell phones open during this time, making a quick call or text message, before the subway submerges again into darkness.

Or people take the time to nap and miss everything.

je ferais comme les voyageurs de ce métro, je regarderais ce coucher de soleil qui doit être magnifique.
I would make as the passengers of this subway, I would look at this sunset which must be splendid.

love the sunset with the twinkly bridge lights.

I have to ask (as one so wimpy about taking pictures with strangers around) - do you just start snapping away, or do you like, tell those people first that you're going to be sort of shooting "through" them, or ask them if it's okay?

I always WANT to photograph people, but I'm such a chicken!

PS - Thanks for putting 365daysinislip on your blog list! I feel so honored :-)

Hi Olivier
It's hard not to look when the skyline and Brooklyn Bridge are outside!

Your welcome, Bettye
As for taking photos of people, I usually start snapping away. If the people look upset, I stop.

I am a chicken, too! It really depends on the vibe and how strongly I feel about what I see.

Count me in as a chicken in situations like this. I think it's great that these New Yorkers aren't too jaded to enjoy a nice sunset.

Now I feel like I'm missing out on an evening commute over the water. Great shot.

Ive found that a lot of people don't notice that I took a picture of them, especially at a distance. They see me I'm sure, but either don't care or think I'm taking something else.

I wish I could take a train to and from school. I hate paying to fill my tank anymore! Plus, if the train is above ground I can take in some sights that I don't normally get to see when I'm focused on driving.

Great photo as always Kitty. I like the contrast of the guy in the middle being completely oblivious and into his music, or his sleep ;-)

I like how the 3 pictures, following each others, tell a story: the big guy is the dreamer, watching the landscape as it progresses ; the woman is the curious one, she saw him captivated by the gorgeous sky, she's intrigued, the minute the sun is gone, she's bored, then she sees you. And right in the middle, one very zen guy. Excellent. :)

I'm a sucker for a pretty sunset.

And he's not napping..he's just resting his eyes.

That used to be my daily commute for almost a decade when I worked in downtown Brooklyn.

The best thing about that route is the first stop in Manhattan, which is Chinatown. I would frequently stop for dinner there before heading home.
