Photo by myself on the Q Train, around Canal Street.
The woman standing in front of me graciously allowed me to take a photo of her beautiful dog, a Pomeranian mix.
The dog was calm throughout the whole train ride, his head poking out of a dog carrier. The carrier looks like a tote bag but is specially designed with a scoop taken out of the end panel.
Dogs and other animals are allowed on the subways when transported in carriers. Seeing-eye dogs are also allowed, on leashes. To transport a bigger dog, you will need to take a cab.

He/she is gorgeous!
cleverly :D
He looks fine, he must be used to it. Lovely dog.
Comfortable!
Very cute and funny subway capture, Kitty!
Ruff, ruff!
He's so calm! A real New Yorker.
how incredibly cute! I wish my Priscilla was calm enough to be able to transport her like that - I'd take her everywhere.
Cute "voffe"!:)
such a great photo! next time I am in the city, I am taking a photo of the first cute doggie I see...I always seem nervous to ask to take their photo!! :(
Do you know where to find the law for that? I got busted by a bus driver the other day. I had my dog secured in a tote bag and he very sternly told me that next time the dog had to be in a "cage bag." I don't know the specifics of the law so I couldn't agree or refute.
Thanks everyone! I'm glad you liked this photo.
Kizz, I don't know where I knew this from, but after a brief search, here's what I found on the MTA site:
'Except as otherwise provided in paragraph (2) of this subdivision, no person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container and carried in a manner which would not annoy other passengers.'
So I think your guy was being extra tough with you! For the link, click here. It's listed under Section 1050.9 Number 8.
We know hot dog, doggy book at the restaurant, but doggy bag on the train...never see
It's oniric
Someone on the 6 told me that they switched to a stroller with a zip-up mosquito net because MTA told her that her Pom could bite someone if just carried in a tote.
Hi Anon,
I have never seen an MTA person confront anyone about their dogs. The conductors generally are stuck in the cars, watching whether the doors are clear before they're closed.
I can see though how a dog might get really antsy in a bag on a very full car. It can be quite crowded during rush hour. Maybe they were traveling during a very busy time?
