The Wintry View from Central Park South

View from Central Park South
Photo by myself along Central Park South.

The view from an upper floor of the Plaza Hotel on Central Park South is pretty nice indeed.

Fifth Avenue and the Upper East Side is to the right. Way far away straight ahead is Central Park North, or 110th Street. A bit to the left is Central Park West.

You can be sure I'll be back to this location in the Spring, to take photos when Central Park is completely green! I will bring my big camera for sure.

Hi Oliver
True, the snow has its own picturesque beauty. I'm sure in the dead of August we will be wishing there were snow on the ground.

Thanks Joanne
Yes. It is freeezing!

Hi Lily!
Oh my goodness, when you put it that way, it sounds cold.
I'm wishing you some warmth too! Stay indoors if you can help it.

Thanks Sandy!

Hello and welcome Rowena,
Thank you!

Hi Washington
I will have to bring you more photos from the Plaza. It is quite a neat building.

Hi NYC Style!
My office is working on a renovation there, so I will be sure to visit many more times. I count myself as extremely lucky (though not nearly as lucky as the people who own the apartment!)

Great picture from the big black ghost tower of Mount Sinai! For me at least...
Btw, as an architect, what do you think of it?

A great view, well worth re-visiting. Especially if you get to visit the Plaza too.

Hi Tony,
I saw your comment, but didn't have a chance to address it.

I didn't know of the Mt. Sinai building and had to look it up. Was it built in the 60s or 70s?

I used to really love modern architecture. Not that I don't love/like it now, but I now feel that context is more important than aesthetics, especially in a city setting. That building, though it's nice and 'clean' in its own way, seems out of place amongst the limestone of the Upper East Side.

The building makes sense - there is a bottom, middle and top, there are louvers where the mechanical equipment is...but it is such a big, hulking thing. It doesn't make friends with its neighbors.

The view must be pretty nice, though! What are your thoughts about it?

Thank you, Paul!!

Well, basically, I have to agree with you with the only difference that I don't even see its beauty when I try to look at it "out-of-context". Of course the view is amazing, and I love the building the way one loves his ugly pet, but somehow, it's just... I don't know... blatant. Although it doesn't look that bad from here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/newyorkobserver/2987310453/
Guess we can't all work in the Chrysler Building, can we? :)

Sorry, I have no idea when Annenberg was built. Tried to google it but failed. I'm sure its older than me, but that can mean 60s and 70s as well. :)

Ha, Tony, I like the ugly pet reference.
Yeesh, when viewed from that angle, it looks even bigger and not so nice.

Here's another view in context. It really sticks out, doesn't it? I'm surprised people agreed to build it? Often with modern architecture, buildings were rendered without color, just as lines.

It's a real shame and a lesson that once you build something, you're stuck with it.

It really does. I have no idea why they built it like that. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it's a hospital, and as such, it has to comply with special rules and requirements... I don't know, but still. And the color makes it even worse in my opinion.

In the end, I think we can agree that this is another serious case of MetLife Building Syndrome. :)
