Outside O. Ottomanelli's Meat Market, in The Village

Ottomanelli's
Photo by myself at Bleecker and Jones Streets, in the Village.

The storefront of O. Ottomanelli's, a specialty meat market in Greenwich Village, was steamed up due to the weather Wednesday evening.

This traditional style butcher has received rave reviews for their wide selection and friendly service.

Unfortunately they are so traditional, they do not have a website. From what I could tell from the reviews, you can get everything including dry-aged steak, sweetbreads, bone marrow, quail, goose, buffalo...the list goes on.

A flyer below the window announced the health benefits of ostrich meat.

I was in the village briefly early Wednesday evening, around 6 pm. The streets were deserted. Stores were closing up and it was a bit too early for dinner.

In every restaurant, candles were lit, tablecloths were smoothed down. It was as if everyone were breathlessly waiting for the night to begin.

it's the candles that make me want to go inside.

What a gorgeous, atmospheric shot, Kitty! The lighting and steamy window make it so cozy and inviting. Chicago just got its first locally sourced whole animal butcher shop, run by a former restaurant chef. We've gotten a number of exotic cuts there, but even the fairly straightforward pork shoulder I used for a Grilled Pork Roast with Mustard and Fresh Herbs was outstanding. Generously marbled with fat that left the meat juicy, flavorful and tender.

Lovely photo. Interesting they don't have a web site. I guess the rely on the old-fashioned way -- word of mouth.

Ostrich meat was the latest thing here a few years back and indeed I saw some living on a farm outside Leeds, some time back but think that they are no longer there.

Thanks Luis!

Hi Lily,
I'm the same way. Seeing the candles lit and how the waitstaff was preparing for the evening was a treat.

Hi Terry,
I would think this store would be right up your alley.
I'll have to check out your recipe...I'm sure it's delicious and wonderfully depicted!

Hi NYC Style
ah, well, very night in the village is special. I should get down there more often than I do.

Thanks Paz
Yeah, I think they're more into catering to their customers face to face, and less interested in packing their meat to be shipped. Next time I'll have to go inside.

Hi Paul
Wow that is very cool! I would love to see ostriches though it would be sad to see them on a farm.
