Tis the Season...For Mallomars

Sunset Park, Brooklyn
Photo by myself in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Yet another photo from the Chinatown in Brooklyn. I liked how the blue awning framed the view, and which had spots of red throughout.

It's hard to believe it's November already.

With November comes colder weather. And with the colder weather comes one of Mark's favorite cookies.

That's right, Mallomars.

Mark has a sweet tooth, and he loves basic things, like black and white cookies, Entenmann's cakes, Reese's peanut butter cups and the new, chewy Spree.

Mark grew up knowing that Mallomars, a chocolate cookie topped with marshmellow and the whole thing dipped in chocolate, is only found in the colder months. Mallomars aren't available in the summer or in the Southern states, because they would melt. So the other day, when we encountered Mallomars in the neighborhood deli, we knew that winter was coming.

The New York Times wrote about the phenomenon a few years ago. Apparently, 70 percent of Mallowmars are sold in New York, and yes, they're only available in colder months and climates. You can read about it here.

I've never had a mallomar. I didn't realise they were seasonal. They sound similar to something we call chocolate teacakes in the UK :-)

I just saw large boxes of Malomars (but they aren't called that) in the window of a local shop. I'm not sure that is what we called them as kids but it seems like there was always a box of them in the cupboard.

We also liked what were called Wagon Wheels up here. I haven't had either for a long time.

Sounds like Mark is a true connoiseur of the sweet snack! Black and white cookies are one of my favorites, and actually, I love Reese's too - have scarfed those down with abandon, post-Halloween. I'll have to try a Mallomar again - I've not had one in a very long time. Happy Friday!

I love mallomars, though I rarely buy them, it's too much of a temptation for me. ohh! they are the perfect cookie. we had one box in the house recently & they were gone with in 4 days!

What's a mallomar?!?!
It's funny, if I didn't know it was NY I'd swear it was China...

mallomars are made up of 3 distinct ingredients. First there is the graham cracker flavored cookie layer with a marshmallow on top coated in a shell of dark chocolate. It has a rounded shape with a flat bottom. They are superb!
