In Line, On the Phone

On Phones
Photo by myself in Midtown, at 34th Street and Sixth Avenue.

Just outside the subway entrance, people are prone to make last-minute calls before jumping on the train. More than a few people were talking or texting there, Monday night.

The trouble is, standing in front of the stair means blocking half the space. This is most obvious when train-loads of people are climbing up to the sidewalk.

I love how this picture also presents the cultural mix of people in New York...couldn't get such a shot in Europe. Love NY!!!!

Noticed the same as Beatrice, so much different cultural people in a line. In Europe the moods are changing, not so nice.

I think it's time Bloomberg made illegal all cell phone talk within 20 feet of another cellphone yacker. All cellphone yackers will heretofore stay behind the giant metal fence seen in Kitty's pic. Next up: no blue socks on thursday

So here's America in the year 2011. Nice capture, as we say. Wonder if it's also a study in gender. Grace Paley has a fine poem about her "explaining" husband--the link to it is at my place, but if I go find the date, I'll lose my brilliant words here . . .

Here's the Grace Paley poem, titled "Here":

Beatrice B has hit on the main idea in your photo, but those men are present too, and they continue the cultural (and gender) portrait.

Thanks everyone!

I am a little shocked by the comments here about the lack of ethnic diversity in some parts of the world. How can this be? I am perplexed about why it is.

Ken, I love your pov.
Too, too many things going on the city!
