Peering into Urban Archaeology, on Franklin Street, Tribeca

Rejuvenation, NYC
Photo by myself at Franklin and Varick Streets, in Tribeca.

A couple peered into the showroom of Urban Archaeology, last week.

Outside, stood one of the original cast iron mermaids from the Place de la Concorde Fountain. The statue was created around 1820 and can be yours for a mere $350,000 (!). The statue was salvaged when the fountain underwent renovations in the early 1900s.

The Urban Archaeology showroom offers tile, stone, hardware and lighting fixtures. There are also other rare salvaged items, such as mermen, statuary, fireplace mantels and immense, hand-carved marble lions.

Is it the original, why did they transported it to the US? Is there no pond anymore? A lot of money to put it in your backyard.

What an intriguing shop! I will have to put this on my list to visit next time I'm in NY!

Hi Olivier
Yes, I cannot imagine buying such a piece of art, but I'm sure people do. lol

Hi Bieb,
According to the website, it was salvaged and replaced with reproductions at the fountain. Crazy eh?

Hi Cathy
I've embarrassingly never gone into this showroom but I should. It looks very large from the outside. Bring your checkbook!

There must be something special behind that window. The man doesn't seem as anxious.

I usually stop going to blogs who have the words you have to copy down. Blogger added another even harder for old eyes to decipher. I have unchecked mine on my blogs so people don't have to suffer through this nightmare.
