CDP Theme Day - Lines

On Line at the Shake Shack
Photo by myself earlier this year at the Shake Shack, a popular eatery in Madison Square Park, around 23rd Street and 5th Avenue. The line for thick shakes and hot dogs wraps around the park.

It's the monthly City Daily Photo Theme Day again, and this month's theme is 'Lines'.

If you spend any time at all in New York, you will stand on line.

No, not 'in line', but 'on it', on line.

The distinction can be confusing, now that being 'online' means tapping into the internet. But there you go. We New Yorkers have our little oddities.

When I first moved to New York, the term bothered me. What is being 'on line', anyhow? You are not on a line. You're standing in a line, for goodness sake.

Over time, I've come to accept the term for what it is - an understanding among us, like a code word or secret handshake. This is what we do, we crazed people who will brave extreme weather for a hot dog or a Barney's sample sale.

And this is how we say it.

Gosh I've no patience to wait in line! Good shot though.

Those hot dogs and shakes better be good! It looks like the weather is a little chilly on your picture.

I hate waiting in line for anything...especially when I have kids with me...3 year olds aren't very patient. LOL

Love it! Thanks for spreading the word. I didn't know until a few years ago that the rest of the world says "in line". I found a great survey site that asks about regionalisms (ie. soda vs. pop vs. coke, online inline, etc). I'll have to see if I can dig that up.

Cute post. Can't wait for the shake shack to open on the UWS -- never had it but everyone says it's the best. Or do we say "da best?"

kitty, you are dead on.
The first time I heard someone say "next on line" I was a little confused. But I came to love the oddities in New York and - well you know me - there is no such thing as a NY cream cheese and lax bagel. Yum!
(In other cities, "lax" is sold under the label "smoked salmon" :-D)

Tried to eat there when we visited NYC in early September. The line they said, would take about 3 hours, as it was on a Saturday. Didn't get to stay and wait, but I hope to eat there in the future

Thanks for the comment Kitty! I live in Tucson, AZ. I've been to New York 4 times this year. I would move there in a second, but yes, having my 3 children there would be difficult. I'll be back soon!

the food has got to be really good I guess, or maybe really cheap?
There must be a time of day when the line isn't too long, eh?
perfect photo for todays theme.

Sounds like Pinks in Hollywood :)
Funny, I've never heard the term "on line" before except in the computer way, but a friend of mine from NJ told me she waits on line. I wait "in line"!
