On Getting Back to the Grind and New Year's Eve, in the City

Back to the grind
Photo by myself, on the Q train.

The first day back to work took a lot out of everyone. Oy.

On the commute home, folks slept or sat or stood quietly. The party was decidedly over. Boo.

By the way, you would never know it was just New Year's Eve or that the 'ball dropped' or anything like that. It was business as grumpily usual, yesterday.

The official Times Square website says that more than one ton of confetti gets dropped during the celebration. And that there are no portable public restrooms outside (!).

I've never stood outside on New Year's to wait for the ball to drop and most likely never will. But if I were to stand outside for hours and hours in the cold, I'm not sure I could do it without knowing there was a bathroom readily available.

Just the thought of not having a toilet nearby would make me want to pee!

I don't know why such a human need is ignored. The same in Amsterdam, it is not allowed to pee in the streets but a toilet for women nowwhere to see.Only for men. Grrrr

ah ah, en effet le manque de toilette serait un gros probleme, mais une fois dans ma vie j'aimerais bien vivre le jour de l'an a NYC

Ugh.... I did that one year. The no-bathroom thing was TORTURE. Luckily, with my husband being in his Dress Blues, most restaurants let us in to use the bathrooms. But honestly, I'll never do it again.

As for everyone being tired and back to the grind... sometimes I feel I need a vacation from my vacation.

& your photograph captures this mood you describe perfectly!
I just heard on NPR that people write new years eve wishes on the confetti for people in the crowd to find and supposedly some keep these wishes on paper as souvenirs. how cool is that?

happy new year!

for new year's 2001 i was at times square, never again. it had been snowing and it was COLD (even for a polar bear like me). i was told about the no toilet issue beforehand and stopped drinking at 4 pm on the day. my friend's aunt suggested taking a plastic cup to pee in...obviously, we didn't take any. we were back at by friends house at 1.30 am, desperate doesn't even start to describe how i felt...
