Along the West Bank

Riverside Park
Photo by myself, in Riverside Park, around 72nd and Riverside Drive.

This metal structure supports part of a street on the Upper West Side. Below, are basketball courts and a long, paved jogging path that continues virtually the length of Manhattan.

The path has some bumpy and iffy parts to it, cutting through parking lots and streetlights. You can theoretically run from the Upper West Side, past the piers, through Chelsea, all the way down to Battery Park City.

There was a time, a few years ago, that I thought I could rollerblade for exercise. Only I never did it before.

Anyway, long story short, after many wobbly, frightening attempts, I made it down to Battery Park City from Riverside Park in the 70's.

It was fun, but after a rather embarrassing fall in front of a long line of tourists at the battleship Intrepid on Memorial Day weekend (flailing hands, falling forward and bruising a knee), I took a blading break.

Now everyone can walk on the streets a little safer. Hurrah!

Oh, how embarrassing? But at least you didn't break anything!

Back in 4th grade, during a birthday party at a rink, I spent a rickety afternoon trying in vain to ice skate, my ankles giving way at every opportunity. The one time I tried on rollerblades, I had the same feeling! Not my sport, apparently.

Hey Spandrel
You must be very flexible. Ever try swimming or yoga?

I have learned my lesson. I am not a performer!

Looks like you are sitting in the tree, taking this picture!

Very nice photo today. I agree with Fredrik, looks like you were perched in a tree for this one.

Rollerskating/bike riding/skateboarding.ice skating/ anything like that and my legs do not mix together. I'm totally useless at that kind of thing!

Hi Fredrik
Good point. Actually, I'm on the landing of a rather long stairway that connects the upper world of Riverside Drive with Riverside Park, which runs along the water. In the winter the stair can be kind of scary.

Hi Kathrine
wow, thanks so much. I'll be over to your blog shortly!

Thanks Virginia!

Hi Scarlet
funny, I'd think such a music buff would be all coordinated (I guess I am thinking more in terms of dance?).

Anyway, it's safer for everyone then that you and I are off the roads!

Thanks Ken!

Funny, Daryl
yknow there's a new-ish plaza type thing near there, too. They set up a food/drink stand there, which is nice.

All the new piers jutting into the water are nice strolling opportunities. You feel like you're on a boat, surrounded by water.

Hi Lady
your posts crack me up!
