Sample Sale, on Fifth Avenue

A line snaked down the sidewalk for a sample sale of designer clothing. A man in a suit acted as a bouncer.
Rebecca Minkoff ready-to-wear clothing and accessories were being sold 75% off list price. Often, designers rent ground floor spaces for a couple days to get rid of inventory.
It's a win-win scenario - the designers save money selling the items to the public directly, rather than going thru a third party. Landlords are paid for a couple days for spaces that would go un-rented. The public gets inexpensive designer clothing.
There are various on-line websites you can subscribe to, to find out when and where sample sales are.

Touring along Great Jones, Downtown

When sauntering around wearing infinity scarves and tall boots in the East Village, one cannot help but look around at all the older buildings.
The sidewalks are hollow in this area, like many downtown neighborhoods. These are not the typical poured concrete walkways. Basements and/or tunnels lie below.
Trucks are only allowed to park as far as the curb, for obvious reasons1

Behind the Prada Store, in Soho

Its saturated colors work well with the buildings it fronts.

The Holiday Windows at Bergdorf Goodman

The windows at Bergdorf Goodman have to be the most sumptious of all store windows during the holidays. Above, a woman is surrounded by white peacocks, their feathers and a pair of ornate chandeliers.
I'm sure the larger windows costs tens of thousands of dollars each for their designs. I try to see these displays every year, which are always elaborate and fanciful. They're less dependent on gizmos and are more like intricate set designs.
It was a little chilly the other night, but that didn't stop onlookers from oohing and aahing in front of each window, which were rimmed with large decorated frames.
In one window, a woman is shown with dozens of little white dogs performing tricks.
One stunning window showed an aerial view of a musical party in progress.

On Street Carts and Bill Cunningham New York
There are so many street carts out on the sidewalks right now, one doesn't need to find a restaurant for dinner.
I was shooting a cart vendor who was framed in light. We happened to look up at each other at the same moment, just after a woman passed by.
Bill Cunningham New York is a documentary about Bill Cunningham, a street fashion photographer for the New York Times. His 'On the Street' feature is firmly established in the Style section, showing New Yorkers grouped according to fashion theme. It might be denim or slingback heels or cut-offs, whatever happens to be the fashion zeitgeist on the streets or on the runways.
Cunningham himself is a colorful character. He has almost no belongings, save his photo negatives, which are kept in dozens of file drawers. He often works for free. He wears the same blue jacket all the time. He lived in a tiny, tiny artist studio above Carnegie Hall for years.
The documentary shows him in his 60s through to his 80s (he's 82 this year!). To watch him biking around the city and spryly taking photos of passersby on the sidewalks wearing a big toothy grin is absolutely inspiring. He is obviously in love with looking at what people are wearing and taking photos.
I cannot recommend this movie enough. If you're interested in fashion and New York and photography, you will enjoy it.

A Colorful Cab, in Midtown
A colorful, striped taxicab drew some attention from onlookers a few months ago.
The painted geometric motifs refer to Hilfiger's 'Promise Collection', a recent collection of clothing and accessories inspired by African motifs. All of the proceeds from the collection go toward helping communities in Ruhiira, Uganda.

Crochet Lady, in Midtown
A woman with a crocheted hat, cape and skirt crossed the street in Midtown. She carried a crocheted purse.
I'm assuming these items were self-made, since they (at least the clothing) was made with the same color yarn. Good quality yarn is surprisingly expensive and the art of crochet is done more for passion than thrift.

All Wrapped Up, in Soho

It was rather cold on Saturday, with temperatures around freezing. The winter wind made it seem 10 degrees colder.
I was in the neighborhood wandering through all the post-holiday sales, terribly underdressed. When I got home, a hot bath and mug of hot tea was in order.
By the way, this weekend is a 3-day weekend. Monday is Martin Luther King Day and many offices have the day off!

Argh, I am not in love with the above photograph. Consider this a disclaimer.
I've been so busy with work and other stuff, the photography is suffering. There it is. I know it, you don't have to tell me.
Anyway, I wrote in a long ago post about flip flop wearing women in New York. I belong to the flip flop wearing variety.
Others do not. I can understand. New York is not Europe. It is not Santa Monica. Our streets are not pristine.
On the other hand, New York is not completely littered with garbage. Just partly.
It's just so much cooler, temperature-wise to discard your shoes when it's hot. And there are more fashion options.

A Moment for Beauty, on the Upper West Side

A small salon on the Upper West Side called City Brows offers many personal services, including threading, waxing and facials.
The woman in the chair was getting eyelash extensions. With proper care, extensions last about two weeks. (I am pretty sure synthetic eyelashes are used!).
I stopped by Tuesday night for eyebrow threading. Instead of tweezers, a thread is used to remove individual eyebrow hairs.
The attendant pulls a thread very tightly between both hands and rubs it quickly against the client's skin. Hairs are uprooted by twisting rather than plucking. It hurts a little but the pain is temporary.
The cost of threading varies according to the establishment. Threading costs $8 at City Brows.

A fashionable couple walked around the Lower East Side, looking like they were cast in a movie. Everything about these two, from their accessories to their haircuts, are simply perfect.
I apologize everyone, I've been insanely busy lately, and on top of it, suffering from a mild creative slump. Hopefully this will all end soon.

On Fashionistas and Broadway Shows, in Midtown

Some fashionable people wandered around Fifth Avenue.
Cold weather does not mean one has to suffer a loss in style. The sun was overhead at midday, providing some great highlights.
If you're ever in New York, the TKTS booths in Times Square, South Street Seaport and downtown Brooklyn are a great way to enjoy a Broadway show or play at discounted prices. The booths sell tickets for that evening's performance for up to 50% the cost of the ticket. All you have to do is show up and wait in line.
Now there is a free iphone app that allows you to see what tickets are available. You can preview what tickets are being offered before committing to wait in line.

On Broadway, in SoHo

And just like that, we've gone from sunny, mid-50 degree days to chilly November, where temperatures have fallen to the mid-30s at night. Brrrrrr.
Little street food carts, with their lightbulbs shining, provide an image of warmth on the sidewalk. I journeyed Uniqlo in SoHo Monday night, where their entire stock of womens black stockings is sold out.
You can get footless stockings, assorted leggings (also footless), regular socks, knee-highs, sweaters, tee shirts, puffy coats etc., but not one black stocking, perhaps the most important item in a female New Yorker's wardrobe. Their tights, solid and patterned, are well priced, at $4.90 a pair.

Fall Fashion Week, Bryant Park

Fall Fashion Week will upon us next week, between Sept. 9th and 16th. The runways will be up in Bryant Park, as well as camera crews and mobs of people.
Above, a photo from last year's Fall runway shows. Part of the Max Azria crew waited their turn outside the main tent, with a photo line up of their collection.
By the way, Christian Siriano, of Project Runway fame, will be showing his line on the first day. His clothing has been sold at Saks Fifth Avenue and he has dressed such celebs as Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey.
Siriano is a fierce New York resident and calls Williamsburg, Brooklyn his home.

On Photography and the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Apologies for the depressing subject matter.
There's a part of me that feels that raw images, especially photographs, are artistic, because they show things people would rather not see. I think must be the younger part of me with such opinions.
Another part of me feels that art should be uplifting. This is definitely the older part of me. This part has seen enough upsetting things. Hm.
Speaking of contradictions, I was made to discover a talented photographer today. (Hooray! Celebration! Here's to inspiring images!).
The sad thing is that I found her through the obituaries. The Times reported that Corinne Day passed away this weekend, at the much too young age of 48. She was a fashion photographer whose work launched a 16-year old Kate Moss.
Day's work combines both the frivolous and the gritty in the fashion world. She photographed fanciful spreads for Vogue Magazine but also exhibited photos at the National Portrait Gallery. Her series 'Face of Fashion' shows us nude and scantily clad models often without makeup and often in less than glamorous settings.

On Little Black Dresses and Little Black Dogs

The language of many fashionable women of a certain set is shown above: little black dresses, big bags, small dogs. Most of the time, the small dogs are placed into the big bags during subway rides.*
There is a requisite splash of jewelry. There are sandals, pedicured feet and plucked eyebrows. There are bodies toned from daily gym routines and nightly evenings on the town.
*All dogs, except seeing-eye dogs, must be placed in carriers while on the subway. If the dog is too large for a bag, they cannot get on the train.

Working the Sidewalk Catwalk, in Midtown

The above photo was taken just steps away from Bryant Park, the home of New York Fashion Week, and the Garment District. Mannequins wearing designer creations lined Broadway in an installation called Sidewalk Catwalk.
Thirty-two mannequins are displayed, wearing fashions designed by Tommy Hilfinger, Diane Von Furstenberg and Norma Kamali, among others. Above, a woman points out a design by Isabel Toledo.
People were gawking at the designs and posing with the models, which are displayed within a pedestrian zone, along with large umbrellas and cafe chairs.
The clothing is being auctioned off, but will be on exhibit until September 3rd. Proceeds will benefit Materials for the Arts, which provides donated materials to New York City schools.

The Lower Half of the Pants, in Park Slope, Brooklyn

They say New York is one of the fashion capitals of the world. I wouldn't say this is 100% true.
Above, an odd combination of boxer shorts and reverse cut-off jeans. I'm not sure who is wearing the upper half of her pants, or how her below-the-knee jeans stay up?
Anyway, scores of food vendors lined one of the major streets by Prospect Park, this weekend. Brooklyn was celebrating Gay Pride, as it does every year. The older parts of Brooklyn are very traditional, but overall, it's a rather open-minded borough.
