A man grilled one of several guinea pigs this weekend, in Prospect Park.
He was a very sweet man, actually, and when I approached him, he said 'cuy' (pronounced 'quee'). I asked whether he was from Ecuador, and he said yes.
Later, Mark saw that someone had called the police, thinking the man was 'mistreating a squirrel'. The police call made it to several internet news sites, including the New York Daily News.
Guinea pigs are popular pets for children here, hence the surprise.

Dressed for the Holidays, in Prospect Park Brooklyn

I met this little french bulldog in Prospect Park, the other day. She was dressed for the holiday season, and looked as if she were reflecting on holidays past. There was a very thin dusting of snow on the ground.
Mark and I spent most of the week in Brooklyn, far away from the crowds that have swarmed into Manhattan. We had a very relaxing time off work.
It's suddenly very cold, here, which shouldn't be much of a surprise since it is January. We had virtually no snow in 2012, just the very light dusting here and there.
Oh yes, I feel the same way. Must we go back to the grind??!

Jingling and Jogging, in Prospect Park

Thousands of runners ran the loop around Prospect Park, this morning, dressed in costume. Nearly 6,000 runners finished the race.
The 'Jingle Bell Jog' is a 6K run held every year by the New York Road Runners club. I happened to be in the park this morning with Rupert and had no idea the run was held today. But when I heard the distinctive jingling and loud whoops of joy, I knew we were in for a treat.
Rupert and I stood to the side while hundreds of runners dashed by us dressed in reindeer antlers, red noses, santa hats and santa tutus. Runners were given t-shirts and bells for the race.
There was even a guy wearing nothing but a santa hat and a red speedo! Eek! Fortunately for him, it wasn't too cold.
What seemed to be an endless stream of runners went by, as we waited on the curb to cross.

The Morning Mist, in Prospect Park, Brooklyn

The morning mist hovered above the ground in Prospect Park, which was scattered with leaves. Owners were there with their dogs for off-leash hours, this morning.
It was a gorgeous morning-after-Thanksgiving, not too chilly. Not too many Owners were there...maybe they were sleeping off their food hangovers.
The larger public parks have off-leash hours before 9am, so dogs can socialize and run about. Our dog Rupert enjoyed his game of fetch, as usual.

Dog Days of Summer, at Prospect Park, Brooklyn
To cool off during the summer, dogs enjoy the cooling waters of the pond, in Prospect Park.
A fence is put up in the pond, to prevent dogs and their toys from going out too far. Ducks and turtles can often be spotted on the the other side.
Sometimes, owners wind up going in, too, at least, up to their knees.

A gaggle of little kids clung to the trunk of a big tree in Prospect Park, Saturday. For whatever reason, they kept walking around and around. Haha.

A Rupert Update from Prospect Park, Brooklyn
In the mornings, the rolling green lawns of Brooklyn are sometimes misty with fog. Above, our Boston Terrier, Rupert, was playing keep-away with friends.
Before 9am daily, dogs are allowed to run around off leash for exercise and play*. After 9am on the weekends, the fields are filled with Little League baseball games, with teams of little kids dressed in uniform.
Prospect Park is large and an incredible amenity for Brooklynites. There are public grills and picnic tables for public use, ponds filled with wildlife, and enough space to be able to relax without sitting on top of each other.
Here's a recent video I shot on my iphone of Rupert playing fetch. I call him 'Pupkin' in the video because his full name is Rupert Pupkin, after a character in the movie 'King of Comedy'.
*In case you're wondering, all owners are required to clean up after their dogs at all times. Most do.

Walking Tightrope, in Prospect Park, Brooklyn
A couple of people tried their hand at walking on tightrope, in Prospect Park.
We had a stellar weekend here, brightly sunny and breezy. Temperatures rose to 78 Fahrenheit or 25 degrees Celsius. Tons of people relaxed in the city parks. There were picnics and little league games and all else.
Some folks rode horseback. Others walked tightrope. That kinda thing.

Walking the Dog, While Pedalling
A man 'walked' his dog, last weekend, while riding a unicycle.
I have to admit I've noticed a larger assortment of vehicles in the last year or two. Unicycles have been around for a while, but they join the legion of pedicabs, bicycles, tandem bicycles, skateboards, scooters, rollerblades and mopeds on the streets.

Saturday Morning, in Prospect Park, Brooklyn

It was a gorgeous Spring morning in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. The sun was out and a morning mist hugged the ground.
We are due for some really beautiful weather this week. Typically there is almost no Spring in New York. We'll see how long this lasts!
The park was very busy this morning with runners, dogs off-leash (til 9 am) and a bike race in progress. I was at the park to play fetch with Rupert, our Boston Terrier.
Recently, fellow photo-blogger and dog owner Rose from Oz asked how Rupert was. I haven't posted a photo of him in a while. Rup and I went to the park by ourselves. My fiance Mark is in Miami for a work project.
Rupert was much too busy prancing and fetching to pose for me. I was nearly doing summersaults to get him to stand still. When in fetch mode, he is very pushy!

With Bells on at the Jingle Bell Jog, in Prospect Park

Thousands of runners showed up for the Jingle Bell Jog, a 3.7 mile run around Prospect Park, Saturday morning.
Runners were given little bells to tie onto their sneakers. There was the constant, faint sound of jingling as feet pounded the asphalt. Runners were encouraged to wear holiday garb, to celebrate the season.
There were giant snowflakes, elves, reindeer, and of course, Santas. There were also runners in random costumes, like gorilla suits and tutus (!).
The race was held by the New York Road Runner's Club (NYRRC), so tons of people from all boroughs were there. I had to leave sooner than expected, since my hands were freezing. It was in the 40s and a bit windy.
Costumes were not limited to the holidays!
It was chilly out for this fellow to run, nearly naked.
By the way, sign-up for the NYRRC's annual run up the Empire State Building ends tomorrow. The actual race is in February. The run is up 86 flights up stairs and only a lucky 600 applicants participate. Runners are selected via lottery.

An Early Snowfall, in Prospect Park, Brooklyn

Saturday, we had an early snowstorm. The trees lashed about and by the afternoon, the moderate rain turned to snow.
This morning, the sun came out and the park was full of dogs and their owners, who were happy to get outside. It was nice in the sunshine but a bit windy and chilly in the shade. Above, you can see our dog Rupert in the lower right corner, trotting back to us.
Most of the New York parks have off leash hours for dogs before 9 am every day. It's a great way to exercise and socialize your dog. There are fenced in dog runs, too, that are open all the time.
Rupert, our Boston Terrier, is absolutely in love with the rubber ball. He can play fetch for hours.
One Brooklynite decided to get on his skiis.
Everyone and everything is casting long, bluish shadows.
We've been hearing that this winter will be a wet one, meaning lots of snow. Ugh.
I'm not one for constant sunshine, but a lot of snow is just the pits. Not so nice, trudging back and forth to the subway on dark mornings. Usually it doesn't snow here until at least November.

Skating In-Line, in Prospect Park Brooklyn

The main loop in Prospect Park was busy with a race for in-line skaters, Saturday morning.
Serious rollerbladers geared up in colorful jerseys zipped around in formation. The usual crowd of runners, joggers and cyclists were out, too, despite high humidity.

The Sound of Drums, in Prospect Park, Brooklyn

On any given Sunday afternoon, the rhythmic sound of drums can be heard throughout Prospect Park, playing in unison for lengths of time.
My fiance Mark and I made our way toward the sound. There they were, about ten guys with drums between their knees. A couple guys with mallets stood behind taller drums.
There is in fact a designated spot for drummers in Prospect Park, in a spot called Drummer's Grove. Drummers assemble there every Sunday.
There must have been construction going on at Drummer's Grove this weekend. The above photo was taken in another corner of the park, at 9th Street and Prospect Park West.

Taking a Dip, in Prospect Park Pond

We had a beautiful morning on Saturday. In celebration, the dog pond was chock full of dogs enjoying the water.
One corner of a pond is cordoned off with a low fence, so dogs can swim about. The bank of the pond is covered in concrete. There, the owners stand to watch.
Rupert loves to play ball in the shallows, getting his head wet, before playing an intense game of fetch in the fields.
There are equal shares of sniffing and play. Just visible in the background is the low fence in the pond.

Playing Badminton in Burqas, in Brooklyn

A group of young women enjoyed a game of badminton in Prospect Park, Saturday. They wore burqas and traditional clothing and scarves over their heads.
This is one of many cases where I wish I had my dSLR camera on me, for better detail. Drat!! We were taking Rupert on a walk and I didn't want to be weighed down with a heavy camera.
I have to wonder whether these garments keep you cooler. It's been very humid and rainy the last couple of days here.
I hope everyone's weekend has been a restful one! Mark and I hosted a barbecue on Sunday and will spend the day recovering on the sofa.

Pinata Party, in Prospect Park

Family and friends gathered around a Spiderman pinata, Saturday afternoon. This must have been the little boy's birthday party.
I only wish I knew what was being said, but the expressions say it all. These kids could hardly wait to take their turn to wear the blindfold and swat at the pinata.

Morning in Prospect Park

In the mornings before 9 am, dogs are allowed to run off-leash in the larger parks throughout New York City.
The dogs run around, play, wrestle and socialize. The owners socialize, too. It's a good time to unwind from the week, and catch up with neighbors.
This morning was wet and very chilly, with a strong wind. The above photo was taken last weekend, when it was sunny and there was a quiet mist near the ground.
People were running and cycling on the main loop in Prospect Park. In the distance, dogs were sniffing about. I had to stop our dog Rupert in his tracks to take the photo. All Rupert wanted to do was to get across the road and play ball.

Roaming Free, in Prospect Park, Brooklyn

Prospect Park in Brooklyn hums every day during off leash hours. Dogs are allowed to roam off leash before 9 am and after 9 pm, year round.
We're at the very beginning of Fall here. Some trees have turned color and leaves have dusted the ground. It was brisk, perfect temperature for dogs to romp, play and socialize.

In the summer, tons of dogs show up in the mornings. Fido, the Brooklyn off leash group, hold gatherings on the first Saturday of every month. Coffee and bagels are served up on the lawn.
