The other day I was coming home from doing an errand after work. I somehow got on an Q train headed uptown rather than downtown, and got out at 49th Street in the midst of Times Square. My worst nightmare.
A jillion people were there, and it was hot. As you can see, there are psychics here, too.
The latest thing it seems are these very scantily clad women who pose with tourists. They wear tiny bikini bottoms and no tops whatsoever. [Actually I'm not sure they are wearing bottoms. The jury is out]. What looks like a bikini top is actually painted on!!!!!!
Oh, and feathers. They have feathers on their heads.

First Snow, in Times Square

The snow started coming down Thursday night, our first snow of the year. The forecast predicts the snow will continue all night long. We may get as much as 20 inches of the white stuff (!).
In Times Square, people kept looking up, as if it were still raining New Year's confetti. The air was very chilly and all the light snow was swirling around.

Below Times Square and a Rupert Update

Big posters about the musical 'Kinky Boots' decorated the walls below Times Square.
Most of the time, this space is packed to the gills with people. Very often, the posters here have people in them, so you get the effect of there being...even MORE people here.
To cool off, our dog Rupert swam in the dog pond in Prospect Park. Boston Terriers aren't known to swim, because they don't have much fur or fat to keep them buoyant. But he loves the water.
Here he is, still damp, with ball in mouth.

6:24pm, Below Times Square

A man played a steel drum at the Times Square subway stop, Tuesday night. It made for a lot of clanging. Meanwhile, trains were pulling up and the announcers were making their announcements.
As usual, there were tons of people about. If you live long enough in New York, you know exactly where along the platform to stand, so you're next to the exit at your destination.
I am working on a fancy kitchen in a townhouse, two condo apartments being merged into one giant apartment, a tiny baby's room, and a duplex on Fifth Avenue. And I am helping a coworker with her project on Park Avenue. And a neighbor just asked me to help her with her plans to open a day care (!!!).
I'm usually at work until late but I had a meeting on Tuesday. Rush hour is something you want to avoid in the city. Just getting into a subway car can be a hassle.

Waiting, in Times Square

A random assortment of people stood patiently, waiting for the light to change.
This photo was taken from the back of a passing cab.
There were huge traffic jams on Tuesday because President Obama was speaking at the U.N. I had a meeting on the Upper East Side and it took forever to get there, and cost a huge amount of money.
On the way back, my cab driver suggested 'cutting through Central Park, going down Central Park West, then taking 7th Avenue'. This is the equivalent of running from second base to home plate by way of right field.
This is why we happened to drive through Times Square. Usually we just drive straight down Fifth Avenue.

Street Meats, on Seventh Avenue
The street carts are always great photo opportunities, with the lights, scrolling LED signs and steam. This cart was selling grilled meats on skewers, pretzels and drinks.
We've been having steamy, uncomfy weather here in New York. It's this time of year when you realize how unnatural it is to go underground (to ride the subway) when it's so darned hot.
Of course, all eyes are turned toward London, at the Olympics. The latest updates are broadcast in the elevator cabs of our office building.

On Gotham City and a Rupert Update
The lights and movie billboards in Times Square make for easy photos. Huge signage for the Batman movie loomed above the typical crowds of people.
Billboards were layered against different types of glass on one of the modern towers. The trusses holding the building up can be seen through the glass.
I walked through this area on Wednesday night. We'd had heavy rain in the morning and it was still very humid after work.
I'm not sure whether it registers to New Yorkers that the Gotham City in the Batman movies is our fair city? The term 'Gotham' is used only occasionally and only in the press. People don't mention 'Gotham' in typical conversation.
Daily Photoblogger Rose from Oz asked what New Yorkers do with their pets when they travel. Most board their dogs, have walkers come by or even leave their pets with friends.
Rupert and I had a nice reunion Tuesday night. He was very hungry and romped for an extended time, playing fetch, his favorite game.
Here's a recent photo of him with his buddy Duchess, a border collie, in Prospect Park. They had just romped around and look happy as a couple clams.

The Look, in Times Square
Just a split second at Times Square. There were crowds of people as usual and I caught a woman looking a little miffed.
Times Square is not just the location of bright lights and signage. The 42nd Street subway station services many, many train lines, and the bus station at Port Authority sees tons of commuters daily. Buses run to Boston, New Jersey, upstate New York and elsewhere.
At each intersection, there is a mix of commuters scurrying quickly to catch their ride home and visitors wandering around slowly. The area can be overwhelming.

Balancing Act, Below 42nd Street
A large group of spectators watched while several guys put on a show to hip hop music at the Times Square subway station.
These fellows performed a mix of gymnastics and dance.
There is a large space at this station that seems ideal for live performances. Pedestrian tunnels to the N, R, 1, 2, 3 and 42nd Street shuttle lines intersect.

Sharing a Moment, in Times Square

A couple lounged in some of the chairs scattered about in the pedestrian area of Times Square. There were crowds milling about, gawking at the billboards and LED screens.
The seating areas and closed off streets are a recent phenomenon. Under Mayor Bloomberg, portions of Broadway have been closed around Times Square and Madison Square Park. There hasn't been much of an affect on traffic, though.
We've been having unseasonably warm weather here. Thursday was slightly humid and brightly sunny, with highs near 73F (that's 22C). All the flowering trees are abloom, much to the dismay of those with allergies.
Usually March is a cool and clammy month.

Smashing Billboards, Below Ground

A series of billboards below Times Square advertised the new TV show called 'Smash'. The show is about actors putting on a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe.
Advertisers take advantage of locations that have many billboards lined up one after the other. Using large-scale images, they can target the thousands of commuters that pass by, every day.
Several train lines stop at Times Square, and the platforms are linked together with a maze of ramps, tunnels and stairs. If you need to transfer from the 2 train to the R train, for instance, you have to walk several hundred yards, turning corners and dodging crowds going the opposite direction.

Mimes, Below Times Square

Three masked mimes performed acrobatics to music, Friday night. Behind them, a large scale mosaic glimmered in the light.
Lately it's been very cold. A bit too cold to stand outside, hands gripping a small metal camera, while the wind whips around. The subway stations are ideal places to watch people in relative warmth.
Speaking of the weather, New York is due to get 2-4 inches of snow Saturday morning. We've had no snow this season, save a freak early snowfall in October.

Burning Bright, in Times Square

A photo just outside the crossroads of the world, so to speak.
What I like about this photo are the different types of light. The LED lights have a very bright white to them. The streetlight on the left has a yellow tone. The interior lights on the right are fluorescent and greenish. The uplights at the billboard on the right are very dramatic, cantilevering out into space.
This photo was taken on my new Leica dLux 5, which works well at night if there are bright light sources. The photos of the Veteran's Day Parade and NYC Marathon were taken on a Canon 40D, which is much faster at writing large raw files.
If you're going to take photos of an event, go with the fancier camera. It's a royal pain to wait a second after every photo you take, while the camera saves your shot.
A couple friends of mine used to live in the Times Square area.
Times Square is not a homey place, as you can imagine. My friends related better to Hell's Kitchen, which is just west of Eighth Avenue. Hell's Kitchen is comprised of low rise tenement buildings on the side streets. The avenues are lined with restaurants, bars and small housewares stores.
If you're ever in the Times Square area, do walk the extra block or two west to Hell's Kitchen. You can have lunch there and browse around. Don't be put off by the name, which the neighborhood adopted back in the day when it was rougher. It's a much safer there than it used to be!

A Glimpse of the Naked Cowboy, in Times Square

I posted photos of the cowboy earlier, here, and he was much, much more muscular (!).
Like any good capitalist, whoever the real Naked Cowboy is, must rent out his name and likeness. He's probably lounging along the Riveria while his clones work the streets.

On Taking Snaps and More on Irene

Yet another photo from Times Square, this one from the stash.
Though I hate crowds, I enjoy seeing the people and their expressions when encountering all the signage and displays.
Thank you for the kind thoughts while we wait for Hurricane Irene to come upon us and pass!
It's been raining heavily at this writing. Most of our Saturday morning was spent mobilizing our apartment building for hurricane prevention. We stowed about 20 garbage cans and all moveable objects so they won't blow around and take out a window. Neighbors came together to make this happen.
We're due for heavy rain tonight. Irene herself is due to touch down tomorrow
Mark and I were at the grocery store this morning, too. The lines were out the door with people stocking up. It was a minor madhouse.
Our neighborhood in Park Slope was not in the evacuation zone, but areas just alongside us are. The Mayor ordered residents living close to the water like those in Red Hook, Williamsburg and Lower Manhattan to leave.
Mark, Rupert and I probably won't go outside again until after the storm. Believe me, we have plenty of toilet paper and doggie wee wee pads. Of course, I'll be out there taking photos of the damage!

A Glimpse of 42nd Street, Times Square

Above, just a smattering of signs on 42nd Street.
The street is known for crazy signage, crowds of people and wide sidewalks. Lining the street are movie theaters, fast food joints and the occasional arcade.
Few New Yorkers traverse this block because it's so crowded. Their only destination would be Port Authority Bus Terminal, the enormous low building on the far left.
The sun was setting in this photo, casting dramatic shadows on the sidewalk.
