A street art installation took place the other day, on the theme of 'What are you thankful for?'. Pieces of chalk lay on the ground, for all to join in.

Humor, with a Money Back Guarantee

Photo by myself in Washington Square Park, around West 4th Street.
Here's another photo I took on the way out of the park the other day. A young man offered to tell original jokes, for a dollar apiece.
Money is refunded if you don't laugh. But if you're broke, the joke is on the house.
I was on my way to an appointment, so I couldn't stop to chat with this fellow. Next time!

Crazy for Bubbles, in Washington Square Park

Photo by myself, in Washington Square Park.
We finally had a bona fide Spring-like day, Saturday. Sort of on schedule. Hooray!!!
People walked about, enjoying the air. A couple competitive basketball games were going on at the public courts near West 4th Street, in the Village.
A woman created enormous bubbles in Washington Square Park, to the delight of a gaggle of children. She used two long sticks with string strung up between them. Dipping the string into a soapy mix, she then lifted up the sticks and let the wind do its magic. What a simple yet effective device!
All the grown ups stood around enjoying how excited the kids were, and wishing they could run and jump around, too. It was serious fun.
Huge apologies for my spotty attendance, once again. It's been insanely busy at work. And I've become insanely picky with my photos.
Happy Spring, everyone!

Baby Grand, in Washington Square Park
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park.
A pianist performed outdoors in Washington Square Park.
This was on a Sunday, and people were enjoying the weather. I don't recall what the pianist was playing, perhaps Chopin?
I never know what I will encounter in Washington Square Park. For whatever reason, it seems this is the location for music. Sometimes there will be a small jazz band. I've seen upright pianos, too.
Mark has been going through some health issues, and I came down with a cold. No fun. Plus, we're going through some dreary weather here.
The other day the police arrested a young man who was planning to bomb the Federal Reserve Bank. I don't think he got beyond the planning stages, but it was a startling announcement, coming on a typical day like any other.
Happy Friday, everyone!

Chess Showdown, in Washington Square Park
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park.
A small crowd looked on as a youngster took on a very serious looking adult in a game of chess.
Another photographer was in the background. There are many chess tables at this park, all for free public use. All you have to do is bring yourself, some chess pieces and some patience!

Hug, in Washington Square Park

A young couple hugged in Washington Square Park, Sunday afternoon. The triumphal arch of the park is in the background.
We had another gloriously sunny and lovely weekend. The September and October months here are usually very nice.

Portrait of Two New Yorkers, in Washington Square Park
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park, in the Village.
While sitting in Washington Square Park, Sunday afternoon, I encountered a gentle New Yorker and his Owner.
They live close to the park and were so nice to pose for me.
The four-legged New Yorker sniffed my hand and gave me a lick. Meanwhile, tons of people were milling about and a pianist was playing music outside.
The dear pup gave my camera a sideways look.
Both were patient with me, allowing multiple shots. I could not resist!

Portrait of an Artist, in Washington Square Park
Photo by myself, in Washington Square Park.
While walking through Washington Square Park, Sunday, I met a chess player named Dawes. He was sitting with all his chess pieces out near the southeast entrance to the park.
Only Dawes isn't just a chess player. He also salvages pieces of wood from Washington Square Park and carves them into sculptures, giving the wood a new life.
Dawes gave me a history lesson of Washington Square Park, then showed me his work. He scrolled through hundreds of photos, on his phone. Then, after telling me about a book he plans to publish of his carvings, Dawes reached into his bag and generously gave me a carving of my very own. :-)
The artist named Dawes proudly showed me one of his hand-carved sculptures.

It was chilly and overcast in Washington Square Park, the other day. It was late in the afternoon, and the outdoor lights started turning on.

Green Man, in Washington Square Park
Photo by myself, in Washington Square Park, in the Village.
Lots of people were enjoying the sun in Washington Square Park, sunning themselves on the grass and just hanging out on benches.
One of our many superheroes was enjoying the sun, too.
I'm not sure what baffled me more - the green guy in the suit or why I didn't investigate him more when I took this photo. I must be one of those jaded New Yorkers!
It turns out there is a whole movement of Green Men. He or she have been sighted all over the place. I don't know the significance of the green suit. If anyone has a reason, please clue the rest of us in.
The Green Man even has a Facebook page. Click here to see his/her photos.

In Thought, in Washington Square Park
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park.
A photo from the stash.
A woman sat in Washington Square Park with her puppy. The dog looks like a labradoodle to me, which is a combination of a labrador retriever and poodle.
We are supposed to get rain all week long! Argh!!
April showers are a month late this year. Good for the plants, not so good for photo taking.

In Sun and Snow, Washington Square Park
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park, in the village.
Just outside the dog run in Washington Square Park, and older fellow sat in a lawn chair enjoying the sun.
In one hand, he held a transistor radio. The other hand, he held a reflective shield, which is unfortunately hard to see.
Yes, folks, this man was tanning! What else is there to do on the weekend?!
I tried getting a better photo from the front, but there was no chance. He was onto my dastardly tricks.

On Outdoor Piano Recitals and a Visitor's Point of View
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park, in the Village.
A very informal concert in Washington Square Park took place during a brief glimmer of sunshine, Sunday morning.
A pianist performed on an upright piano that was on temporary wheels. Slapped on the side of the piano is a sticker that says 'Manhattan Mini Storage', a popular storage company in the area.
I thought it'd be interesting to show photos once in a while taken by visitors to New York. What better way to see a city, than from a fresh set of eyes?
Here are a couple wonderful detail photos, taken by my friend Carmelo in Italy. Carmelo visited New York on his honeymoon last summer and took over 5,000 photos in 10 days!
Photo by Carmelo. New Yorkers can be a fidgety bunch, with our caffeine, cigarettes and mobile devices.
Photo by Carmelo. Another pianist played outside, during Play Me, I'm Yours, a city-wide public arts project held last summer.
Thank you, Carmelo, for these great shots! I will file these under 'New York Visitors' and share such viewpoints, once in a while.

Happy Christmas All, from the Village
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park.
A photo from my stash during SantaCon, last year. A whole mess of Santa Claus's convened in Washington Square Park, in the Village.
New York is generally very quiet on Christmas Day. Major stores are closed and there is virtually no traffic. If you're visiting the city, never fear, there are always a handful of restaurants that are open.
Merry Christmas, everyone!!

Here's Looking at You, in Washington Square Park
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park.
I was spotted by both a woman and her little dog the other day, while taking photos in Washington Square Park. Yikes.
Not much to report here, except that with the time change on Sunday, the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm!!!!
Yup.
It will get worse from now til December 21st, before it gets better. A challenge for taking photos, but nothing we can't overcome!

Folk Singers, in the Village
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park.
A group of what looked like good friends or acquaintances shared folk songs this weekend. Seeing and listening to this crew made me wonder if New York of the 70s was anything similar.
I'm glad you all enjoy the portraits of people I run into on the street. I should clarify that these are portraits of 'actual' New Yorkers, not 'real' ones. No one is any more or less 'New York' than anyone else. My bad!
What does it mean to be 'a New Yorker', anyway? It's impossible to classify people because there are always exceptions. But you could say that those who live in New York share certain things, like living in a large city packed with different cultures, religions and walks of life. We experience/tolerate/survive the sidewalks, the subway and city living every day.
For more generalities about New Yorkers, how are these: we work too hard, pay too much in rent, don't save enough money, enjoy a wide variety of ethnic foods, walk fast, don't smile enough, own a disproportionate amount of dark clothing and treat the subway as a part of our homes.
About me - I lived on the Upper West Side for ten years and have been in Brooklyn for the last few. I certainly don't know everything about this place, but I do proudly call it home.

Sand Painting, Washington Square Park
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park, in the Village.
A photo of Joe Mangrum and another fabulous creation this past weekend. A good crowd formed around Joe as he worked.
One can tell that Joe enjoys what he does. He works with relaxed concentration, engrossed in his work. At one point, Joe stood back, looked down and announced how good the piece looked.
I've posted about Joe before, here and here.
Finally, I've seen this fellow often enough to know he operates all year round. Joe is a fixture here in the city, and I wish him many creative years to come.

The Bird Man of Washington Square Park
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park.
A man communed with his pigeon friends, Saturday afternoon.
What started out as a few visiting pigeons very quickly became an excited flurry of feathers. There must have been over fifty birds in the end, all over this guy and on the ground.
We New Yorkers can be a direct bunch. A woman walking by asked him, 'What's so special about you?'
Pigeon Guy replied, 'They trust me'.
Just before the storm of pigeons descended. The bird man's friend knew what was to come.
Mark, Rupert and I visited Washington Square Park, Saturday afternoon. It was a beautiful Fall day and the park was filled with people.
Two groups of musicians were playing. Joe Mangrum, the sand artist, was finishing up yet another beautiful creation, an acrobatic group had drawn a huge crowd, people milled about the fountain and chatted. And all of this was happening at once.
The space was humming with excitement. I have to wonder whether New York has ever had this vibe before, where it's been so festive on a daily basis. Walking through the public spaces, you feel like you're in a small, friendly, artistic town. More photos to come.

On Rainy Days and Shooting for TV
Photo by myself in Washington Square Park, in the Village.
We've been experiencing a slew of rainy days, with a nice day here and there. It's due to rain all next week.
I'm a bit knackered. I spent part of yesterday helping Mark on a shoot for a test commercial for a well-known electronic device. Mark is absolutely wiped out.
The shoot included a tattoo parlor, our apartment in Park Slope, a yoga studio, a bathroom in Midtown, a street scene in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and a hot dog stand in Prospect Park.
As the producer, Mark mobilized his crew - a director, a cameraman, a make-up artist and several assistants for the shoot. He also figured out the locations, got permissions and created a schedule all in one day.
Mark determined logistics on Friday and the test commercial was shot on Saturday. Usually, a two-dimensional storyboard was enough to illustrate an idea. Some companies prefer to view a test commercial before committing a great deal of money to shoot a real commercial.
It was a cool experience, and not the first time I've helped out. We were lucky that Saturday was the one beautiful day in the midst of a slew of cold rainy days. I will have to document the experience next time!
