On Your Outlook, for 2010

Brothers
Photo by myself in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

While waiting for lunch during our vacation in Puerto Rico, I spotted a couple of kids sitting nearby.

Each brother exuded his personality. One met the world with a defiant, cocky look, while the other proffered a measured gaze.

What's your attitude toward 2010? Are you hopeful? Fearful? Blase?

I'm planning on taking things day-by-day. As long as I continue to go to the gym and take photos, that will be enough for me. Small goals I know, but it's the honest truth. I don't need very much to keep me happy.

How about you, dear readers? What are you plans? How is your outlook?

I agree - small, manageable goals are good for me, too. One of my ideas is to begin taking photographs of the area around where I live, to see if it looks at all interesting. Often, seen only through the simple flesh lenses within my eyes, it bores or depresses me. Maybe with a camera to act as a filter I will be able to see things differently.

Merci Claudine!

Hi Lozzie
I highly recommend photography, in that case. You will absolutely see things differently.

Even if things seem depressing, when photographed these things can be transformed. Just the act of being framed by a view and seen by others lends something to a scene.

Part of me likes to share 'depressing' images. It's a bit like truth telling.

Happy New Year from a freezing cold Sheffield!

2010CE for me will be the rebirth. Last year started off with a mental breakdown, which in turn led to three failed attempts at taking my life. Self-harm, OCDs, and recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.

Not fully recovered, but stability and routine are helping. Photography has kept me sane, I have various ongoing projects, that mean nothing to anyone else, but to me, massively important.

I wish you a great new year, where all your hopes, dreams and ambitions are realised.

Hi Mark
Thank you for being so candid about your experiences. Fortunately it sounds like you're on the mend, and I am hopeful that 2010 will be a good year for you.

It's also wonderful to know how photography has helped you through such hardship. I look forward to seeing more of your inspiring images.

Super photo. Haven't made any plans, although I'd like to take a class at the school we'd discussed. Also want to take an art class. I should join the gym but I'm lazy. I've been exercising in the park but with the cold weather and snow, it's put the kabosh on things lately. ;-)

Happy New Year!

Hi Kitty....I love your blog and photos....NYC holds a special place in my heart and while I've lost the person that connected me to this beautiful city, your photos and commentary put a smile on my face and sometimes tears rolling down my cheeks (not always a bad thing. Thank you!

So I am not the only one that finds sanity in photography! I recently read Anne Leibovitz's book At Work where she said "the camera gave you license to go out alone into the world with a purpose". I could relate so much to this. Having moved to Christchurch almost two years ago on my own, and with a natural tendency towards being a 'loner', (and perhaps having forgotten how to make new friends?), photography and my daily photo blog have not only "saved me" from the loneliness that I experienced when I first came here, but enhanced my life considerably. Besides giving me a positive focus and pushing me out and about, taking photographs has given me an enhanced sense of community - without having to be heavily involved in it. What a very special thing photography is...I cherish it!

I look forward to another year of photographing the beauty that surrounds me.

Thanks Kitty for all your photos, and the commentary. I enjoy the blog so much. All the best to you, and to Mark, Rupert and Dida for 2010.

Happy New Year Kitty, I think small manageable goals are the way to go. I made a list of things I wanted to focus on in 2010 and they are somewhat overwhelming, but I am trying to break things into small pieces and make a start :-)

My goal this year is to learn new things. Playing the guitar is a dream I want to fulfill. I was mesmerized when I heard John Mayer giving an amazing heartfelt performance on the guitar of “Human Nature” at the Michael Jackson Memorial in Staples Center in Los Angeles. It's been haunting me since then...
